USDA sets meeting to air next steps on E coli O157

(CIDRAP News) – The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) plans to hold a public meeting Apr 9 and 10 to gather major stakeholders to consider the agency's next moves in the battle against Escherichia coli O157:H7 in beef.

In a news release yesterday, USDA Under Secretary for Food Safety Dr. Richard Raymond said the last significant reductions in E coli contamination and related illnesses occurred early in this decade.

Salmonella type in Colorado water listed; source still sought

(CIDRAP News) – Water quality officials in Colorado said today that the pathogen that contaminated the city of Alamosa's water system is Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium, which they said might suggest a wild animal source of the pathogen.

Water, cantaloupe blamed in Salmonella outbreaks

(CIDRAP News) – State and federal public health officials are managing two large Salmonella outbreaks, one linked to contaminated groundwater that has sickened as many as 216 people in Alamosa, Colo., and another that is apparently connected to imported Honduran cantaloupe and involves 59 illnesses in 16 states and Canada.

Hectic season exposes gaps in flu preparedness

(CIDRAP News) – Friday's announcement by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that influenza appears to be slowing down has left medical personnel relieved for the imminent end of a harsh flu season.

But it has also left them worried over weaknesses that the season exposed in public health's ability to anticipate flu's behavior, and over doubts raised among their patients by the flu vaccine's diminished effectiveness.
