WHO: Flu active in parts of tropics, Southern Hemisphere

(CIDRAP News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) today said pandemic and seasonal flu activity across the globe is low, but said activity is increasing in some parts of the Southern Hemisphere, with significant action still occurring in certain tropical areas, such as India.

FDA approves flu vaccines as first doses ship

(CIDRAP News) – The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced that it has approved the upcoming season's influenza vaccines, as four manufacturers announced they are starting to ship their first vaccine lots.

Today's approval announcement applies to six manufacturers that are making seasonal flu vaccines for the US market. This year's vaccine includes three strains:

CDC launches universal flu vaccination recommendation

(CIDRAP News) – The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today endorsed its vaccine advisory group's recommendation for universal influenza immunization, as public health groups prepare to shift gears from pushing the pandemic H1N1 vaccine to drawing the public's attention to the new seasonal flu vaccine advice.

FDA reports good results for new food safety portal

(CIDRAP News) – The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today issued its first assessment of a reportable food registry designed to speed response efforts when the first sign of a threat emerges, saying the system is already a valuable tool in preventing foodborne illness outbreaks.
