Flu activity up globally, in US, and notably in UK

(CIDRAP News) – The winter flu season is now officially under way in the Northern Hemisphere, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported today in releasing its most recent influenza data.

Meanwhile, US data also released today show influenza activity again rising, and a third report says flu activity is increasing dramatically in the United Kingdom.

Reports call Canada's pandemic response effective, cite gaps

(CIDRAP News) – In two new reports, the Canadian government gives itself a generally good grade for its response to the H1N1 pandemic but also lists many areas for improvement.

"Overall, the response of [health authorities] to the H1N1 pandemic is considered to have been effective," says the Public Health Agency of Canada's (PHAC's) report, released yesterday. The report covers the actions of that agency and of Health Canada.

EU pushes vaccination amid rising flu activity

(CIDRAP News) – The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) today said flu transmission is increasing across the European Union (EU), led by a spike in the United Kingdom, and warned people in recommended groups to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Feds team with Walgreens to raise minority flu vaccination rates

(CIDRAP News) – With signs that the flu season is picking up momentum, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today unveiled a demonstration project to raise flu vaccination rates in minority groups, backed by $10 million worth of vaccine vouchers from Walgreens.

UK leads way as flu activity rises in Europe

(CIDRAP News) – The United Kingdom is on the leading edge of an increase in influenza activity in Europe, with 57 respiratory disease outbreaks and an increase in critically ill patients and deaths reported in the country last week, according to the UK Health Protection Agency (HPA).

Studies show science behind CDC pandemic response

(CIDRAP News) – The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today published a detailed look at the early field and epidemiologic studies it used to guide its response to the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, such as spread among household contacts, disease severity, and the impact on high-risk groups.
