CDC reports first H3N2v death as cases rise to 290

(CIDRAP News) – Federal health officials today reported the first death from the summer outbreak of a new H3N2 flu virus, in an older adult from Ohio who had multiple underlying conditions and had direct exposure to pigs at a fair.

USDA to trim food safety offices in economy move

(CIDRAP News) – The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) plans to close five of its 15 district Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) offices to save money and boost efficiency, a move that officials said will not impair meat and poultry plant inspections.
