European labs use novel coronavirus tests, devise new ones

(CIDRAP News) – Diagnostic tests for the novel coronavirus (CoV) that recently emerged in the Middle East are being deployed rapidly in Europe, and about 250 patients have already been tested for the virus, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

New USDA policies target ground-poultry safety

(CIDRAP News) – The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) yesterday announced new measures to improve the safety of raw ground turkey and chicken products, including requiring companies to reassess their food safety plans.

The new steps are in response to several Salmonella outbreaks that have been linked to ground poultry, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said in a statement.

CDC sees signs of early, bad flu season

(CIDRAP News) – The early uptick in flu infections that are predominantly the H3N2 strain shows some worrisome parallels to the nation's last bad regular flu season in 2003-04, officials from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said today.
