Studies examine safety of adjuvanted pandemic vaccine

(CIDRAP News) – As researchers continue to sort out safety issues surrounding the monovalent vaccine used during the 2009 H1N1 flu pandemic, two new reports focusing mainly on an adjuvanted version suggest that immunization was safe for babies born to vaccinated pregnant women and that it was linked to a small but significant risk of Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) in some patients.

Early antivirals mean fewer ICU visits for pregnant pandemic flu patients

Authors defend study of nondrug measures in 1918 pandemic

(CIDRAP News) – The authors of a 2007 study of nonpharmaceutical measures used in the 1918 influenza pandemic, responding to a critique from historian John M. Barry, argued last week that there is strong evidence that New York City used isolation and quarantine to battle the Spanish flu.
