West Nile surge pushes supply of test kits

(CIDRAP News) – The surge in West Nile virus (WNV) infections in many states over the summer led to a temporary shortage of diagnostic test kits that at one point halted testing at some commercial and local labs and led one state to warn health providers to reserve the tests for the most seriously ill patients.

FDA approves CDC's new rapid flu test

(CIDRAP News) – The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) yesterday approved a new diagnostic test developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that can quickly distinguish seasonal influenza strains from an evolving virus that might have pandemic potential in hours rather than days.

Feds detail progress on pandemic preparedness

(CIDRAP News) – In a recent update on pandemic influenza preparedness planning, the US government reported meeting more than 90% of a long list of objectives it set for itself about 6 months ago.

The report charts progress on a wide range of preparedness measures, from shoring up laboratory capabilities to planning for distribution of critical medical supplies and preparing checklists for various sectors of the economy.
