Turkey has avian flu; UK, Hungary outbreaks may be linked

(CIDRAP News) – Turkey announced today an H5N1 avian influenza outbreak at a farm in the southeastern part of the country, as English authorities explored the possibility of a connection between recent outbreaks in Suffolk and Hungary.

A report submitted to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) by Turkey's agriculture ministry said the outbreak began Feb 5 and affected poultry in a village in Batman province, about 460 miles from Ankara.

(CIDRAP News) – Government investigators were unable to determine where Canada's latest cow infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was born, making it impossible to tell how the animal was exposed to the disease or find other cows that might have been exposed, the Canadian government said this week.

Canadian anthrax outbreak grows, felling 746 animals

August 10, 2006 (CIDRAP News) – An outbreak of anthrax that began in early July, the largest ever recorded in Saskatchewan, has now killed at least 746 farm animals in that province and neighboring Manitoba, according to Aug 9 statistics from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

Anthrax in Canada kills 149 animals, infects man

(CIDRAP News) – A man is being treated for cutaneous (skin) anthrax and 36 farms are under quarantine because of livestock deaths in what has been called the largest anthrax outbreak in the history of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan.

The disease has killed 149 animals on the quarantined farms in northeastern Saskatchewan, according to today's update from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
