Another death in China raises H7N9 fatalities to 32

(CIDRAP News) – Another patient in China has died from an H7N9 influenza infection, raising the number of fatal illnesses to 32, though no new cases were reported today, holding the overall case total to 131.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported the death today in an update based on information from China's National Health and Family Planning Commission.

CDC's early-season look finds flu vaccine 62% effective

(CIDRAP News) – An early assessment of this year's influenza vaccine shows it has provided a "moderate" level of protection at 62% so far this season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said today. That vaccine effectiveness (VE) level is about the same as in recent seasons and as found in a recent careful meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Study: Some trials overestimated flu vaccine efficacy

(CIDRAP News) – Researchers from the University of Michigan say one measure of flu vaccine efficacy that has been used in a number of past controlled trials is not very accurate, and that this may have led to a degree of overselling of the protection the vaccines provide.

Study showing high effectiveness for H1N1 vaccine stirs debate

(CIDRAP News) – A recent case-control study estimates that the adjuvanted pandemic H1N1 influenza vaccine used in Canada was effective 93% of the time, a substantially higher figure than seen in several other studies and one that has raised some eyebrows among other flu vaccine researchers.
