US awards contract for long-acting flu antiviral

(CIDRAP News) – The US government today announced the award of a $231 million, 5-year contract to an Australian company for advanced development of a single-dose, long-acting influenza drug in the neuraminidase inhibitor class.

The contract was awarded to Biota Scientific Management Pty, Ltd., of Melbourne, according to the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), part of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Influenza B viruses with lower antiviral sensitivity reported

(CIDRAP News) – North Carolina health officials have reported a number of influenza B isolates with reduced sensitivity to oseltamivir (Tamiflu), a rare finding, but they say antivirals remain effective and there is no reason for clinicians to change their prescribing practices.

HHS: 386 injury claims filed over H1N1 countermeasures

(CIDRAP News) – The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has so far received 386 claims of injuries related to the 2009 pandemic H1N1 vaccine and related pandemic countermeasures, HHS officials reported today.

HHS awards two contracts for recombinant flu vaccines

(CIDRAP News) – The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) yesterday announced that it has awarded $215 million in contracts to two companies to further the development of recombinant technology, a move designed to improve and speed production of pandemic and seasonal flu vaccines.
