Scientists seek ethics review of H5N1 gain-of-function research

(CIDRAP News) – A group of scientists acting under the aegis of a vaccine research advocacy organization has asked President Obama's bioethics committee to evaluate the ethics of experiments designed to increase the transmissibility of H5N1 avian influenza viruses.

National biosurveillance strategy aims to detect manifold threats

(CIDRAP News) – The Obama Administration this week unveiled the nation's first national biosurveillance strategy, designed to detect a range of threats, including bioterror attacks, infectious disease outbreaks, agricultural threats, and foodborne illness outbreaks.

HHS names 6 new members to biodefense advisory panel

(CIDRAP News) – Six new members have been appointed to the National Biodefense Science Board (NBSB), the expert committee that advises the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on preparing for bioterrroism and other public health emergencies, HHS officials announced yesterday.

The six new members replace six whose 3-year terms ended Dec 31, HHS said in a news release.
