West Nile cases, deaths rose in past week, CDC says

(CIDRAP News) – New cases of West Nile virus (WNV) disease and resulting deaths rose slightly in the past week, ending 2 weeks of declines in the numbers, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) weekly update today.

The report shows that 424 cases, with 16 deaths, were reported in the past week, compared with 403 cases and 13 deaths the week before. The totals for 2012 have now reached 3,969 cases and 163 deaths.

Pace of West Nile virus activity slows

(CIDRAP News) – The number of new West Nile virus (WNV) infections dropped somewhat last week in comparison with the week before, but cases continued to pile up, especially in hard-hit states like Texas

The number of cases rose 19%, compared to 35% the previous week, when officials from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said they saw signs that disease activity might have peaked.

CDC says West Nile activity may have peaked

(CIDRAP News) – Federal health officials today said the worst of the nation's West Nile virus (WNV) outbreak appears to be over but warned that cases will continue to add up at a pace on track to make 2012 a record year.
