New rules give FDA more power to block unsafe food

(CIDRAP News) – The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says two new regulations to take effect in July will give the agency more power to detain unsafe food and identify potentially hazardous imported foods.

The regulations are the first to be issued by the FDA under new authorities it gained with passage of the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act in January, the agency said in an announcement yesterday.

FDA strategic plan promises new food safety approaches

(CIDRAP News) – A 5-year strategic plan released yesterday by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) promises new approaches to food safety in line with new legislation and increased efforts to smooth the regulatory pathway for medical defenses against biological and other unconventional attacks.

US inspectors find food products hard to trace

(CIDRAP News) – Federal inspectors who conducted a survey to identify gaps in the nation's food traceability system told a House subcommittee yesterday that they managed to trace only 5 of 40 products through the full production and distribution chain and that some food facilities didn't know they needed to keep source contact information.

Food firms slow to register under new FDA security rules

(CIDRAP News) – With a Dec 12 deadline approaching, fewer than 20% of food establishments that must register with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under new regulations for protecting the US food supply have done so, FDA officials said yesterday.
