Cases of Marburg, Ebola climb in Uganda

(CIDRAP News) – An outbreak of Marburg hemorrhagic fever has grown to 20 cases in western Uganda, and 10 people in two of Uganda's central districts have contracted Ebola hemorrhagic fever, the World Health Organization (WHO) said recently.

Dutch woman dies of Marburg fever

(CIDRAP News) – A Dutch woman who fell ill with Marburg hemorrhagic fever after visiting a bat-infested cave in Uganda has died, Dutch authorities announced today.

Authorities said the 40-year-old woman, who was not identified, died overnight at Leiden University Medical Centre, according to reports from Reuters and Agence France-Presse (AFP). The woman's illness was first announced yesterday.

Ebola-like outbreak reported in Congo Republic

(CIDRAP News) – Nine people have died in the Republic of Congo from a hemorrhagic disease that authorities are describing as "Ebola-like," and at least another 52 people who had contact with the victims are being monitored, according to news reports today.

Angola says Marburg cases are ebbing

(CIDRAP News) – Angola has had 2 days in the past week with no new cases of Marburg hemorrhagic fever, suggesting that the country is getting closer to controlling the epidemic, Agence-France Presse (AFP) reported today.

Angolan Health Minister Sebastiao Veloso put the Marburg death toll at 284, the report said. That compares with 280 deaths out of a total of 313 cases reported by AFP a week ago. Today's story didn't list the case total.
