Attacks stall surveillance for Marburg cases

(CIDRAP News) – Local residents attacked the vehicles of disease surveillance teams in Angola yesterday, stalling efforts to find Marburg hemorrhagic fever cases even as the toll in the outbreak climbed further, the World Health Organization (WHO) said today.

The outbreak has expanded to 205 cases, 180 of them fatal, the WHO reported in its latest update. Earlier today, WHO officials at a briefing in Geneva had put the death toll at 174.

Marburg death toll in Angola reported at 155

(CIDRAP News) – The outbreak of Marburg hemorrhagic fever in Angola has continued to grow and has killed 155 of 175 people infected, according to the latest reports.

Angolan health minister Sebastiao Veloso gave those numbers in an Agence France Presse (AFP) report yesterday. In a statement yesterday, the World Health Organization (WHO) said the Angolan health ministry had reported 163 cases with 150 deaths.
