Fourteen deaths reported in Uganda Ebola outbreak

(CIDRAP News) – An Ebola outbreak in Uganda that has killed 14 people has mobilized global efforts to contain the disease, the World Health Organization (WHO) said yesterday.

Among the dead are a healthcare worker and several members of the same family, and Ebola cases, including the fatal ones, have now reached 20, the agency said.

(CIDRAP News) – A preliminary genetic analysis of enterovirus serotype 71 (EV-71) isolates from Cambodia suggests that the virus is part of ongoing EV-71 outbreaks in Asia and is similar to those in other countries in the region, including Vietnam.

(CIDRAP News) – As leading influenza researchers prepare to meet in New York City next week, several eminent life-sciences authorities are calling for continuation of a moratorium on studies involving lab-modified H5N1 viruses with increased transmissibility, according to a story today in the British newspaper The Independent.
