Autopsy study leaves severity of fall 1918 pandemic wave a mystery

(CIDRAP News) – A study of preserved lung sections from 68 US soldiers who died in the 1918 influenza pandemic shows that cases from the spring and fall pandemic waves looked much the same and that there is no evidence of viral mutations that could readily explain why the fall wave was so lethal.

Electronic faucets in hospitals may raise infection risks

(CIDRAP News) – Electronic, non-touch faucets are being used in many healthcare facilities to save water and improve hand hygiene, but the faucets may actually increase the risk of infections for some patients, according to research findings released by the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) today.

US flu season still going strong

(CIDRAP News) – The nation's flu activity remained high last week, with the number of pediatric deaths more than doubling from the previous week and most states still reporting widespread cases, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said today.
