FDA approves first med for multidrug-resistant TB

(CIDRAP News) – The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced its approval of Sirturo (bedaquiline), the first drug developed specifically to treat multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), saying it must be used in combination with other TB medications.

Consumers Union study stirs debate on bacteria in pork

(CIDRAP News) – Consumer Reports magazine has stirred debate about pathogens in pork by reporting a small study in which Yersinia enterocolitica was found in 69% of samples, while more common foodborne pathogens like Salmonella and Listeria were much less prevalent.

Europe reports continued rise in antibiotic resistance

(CIDRAP News) – European health officials are seeing a continued rise in multiple antibiotic resistance in Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli, a pattern they say is likely fueled by misuse of the drugs, according to new data.
