Norovirus, poultry leading culprits in US foodborne outbreaks

(CIDRAP News) – Norovirus was the most common confirmed cause of foodborne disease outbreaks in 2007, and poultry led the list of food commodities involved, according to a report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

USDA estimates E coli, Salmonella costs at $3.1 billion

(CIDRAP News) – The US Department of Agriculture (USDA), using its recently released tool for calculating the cost of foodborne illnesses, estimated that Salmonella and Escherichia coli O157:H7 cases cost the nation about $3.13 billion a year.

USDA proposes new Salmonella , Campylobacter standards for poultry

(CIDRAP News) – The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) today unveiled new standards aimed at reducing Salmonella and Campylobacter in broiler chickens and turkeys, a step the agency expects will prevent tens of thousands of illnesses each year.

(CIDRAP News) – E coli O157:H7 was the comparative bright spot today in a federal report that showed little change in the incidence of most foodborne illnesses in 2009.
