Good news, bad news on US antibiotic use and resistance

(CIDRAP News) – Research groups offered a mix of bad news and good news today on antibiotic usage and resistant microbes, including big geographic differences within the United States, as a large coalition of health and medical groups vowed to increase efforts to conserve the nation's arsenal of effective antibiotics.

WHO report notes TB progress, areas for concern

(CIDRAP News) – Several developments are having an impact on reducing tuberculosis (TB) infections and deaths in several countries, but the disease's burden is still enormous, and response to multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) remains slow, the World Health Organization (WHO) said yesterday in its latest report on the global TB situation.

Researchers find alarming global levels of drug-resistant TB

(CIDRAP News) – A large, eight-nation study today reported worrisome levels of tuberculosis (TB) resistant to first- and second-line drugs, along with higher-than-expected levels of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) TB.
