Hong Kong reports swine-pandemic flu reassortant

(CIDRAP News) – A laboratory at Hong Kong University (HKU) detected a reassortant made up of a swine influenza virus and the pandemic H1N1 virus in a sample obtained from a slaughterhouse pig as part of a surveillance program, officials announced today.

WHO says MDR-TB is tough but beatable challenge

(CIDRAP News) – In some parts of the world as many as 25% of people who contract tuberculosis (TB) end up with the multidrug-resistant variety (MDR-TB), but recent experience shows it is possible to control the disease even in hard-hit areas, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in a report released today.
