Bush initiative would promote new defenses against bioterror diseases

(CIDRAP News) – President Bush yesterday proposed an initiative, called Project Bioshield, to speed the development and production of vaccines and treatments for smallpox, anthrax, botulism, and other diseases that could be spread by terrorists.

Host of personal computers will boost hunt for smallpox drug

(CIDRAP News) – A group of universities and private companies have launched an effort to harness donated computer time from millions of personal computers in the hunt for a drug to treat smallpox.

The Smallpox Research Grid Project will use personal computers around the world to analyze interactions between 35 million potential drug molecules and several smallpox virus proteins, according to United Devices, the company coordinating the effort.

Millions of clinical workers to get smallpox information packets

(CIDRAP News) – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced it is mailing information packets about smallpox to 3.5 million physicians and other healthcare workers in a continuing effort to educate them about the disease and the vaccine.

Technical barriers to airborne anthrax attack may be overrated, study suggests

(CIDRAP News) –The results of a spraying program to control gypsy moths in British Columbia suggest that terrorists could use conventional crop-dusting equipment to spread anthrax spores over a city and potentially infect people, according to a report in a new biodefense journal.

To rid skin of anthrax, soap and water beats alcohol

(CIDRAP News) – People whose hands may be contaminated by anthrax should wash them with either antimicrobial or conventional soap and water, but should not try to cleanse them with an alcohol-based hand rub, a new study suggests.

(CIDRAP News) – A Senate committee yesterday unanimously approved the Bush administration's "BioShield" plan to promote vaccines and treatments for biodefense but blocked the administration's proposal for compensating healthcare workers harmed by the smallpox vaccine.

Advance distribution of antibiotics called key to combating anthrax attack

Postal Service to test anthrax detection systems at 14 sites

(CIDRAP News) – The US Postal Service (USPS) is poised to test anthrax detection systems at 14 mail-processing centers around the country once first responders in the local communities feel ready to deal with an anthrax alarm, according to a Postal Service spokesman.
