Avian influenza strikes South Korean chicken farm

(CIDRAP News) – An outbreak of avian influenza in South Korea has resulted in the deaths of 24,000 chickens at a farm southeast of Seoul.

The disease killed 19,000 chickens at the farm and prompted authorities to destroy the remaining 5,000 chickens as a containment measure, according to a report by the OIE (Office International des Epizooties), the world organization for animal health.

Avian flu reported in Thailand, Cambodia

(CIDRAP News) – Thailand and Cambodia joined the list of countries affected by highly pathogenic avian influenza today as both human and poultry cases were confirmed in Thailand and a poultry outbreak was reported in Cambodia.

China reports avian flu; WHO calls for international effort

(CIDRAP News) – China reported an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in ducks today, while the World Health Organization (WHO) joined other international groups in appealing for a multinational campaign to stop the disease's march across Asia.

Another human bird flu case confirmed in Vietnam

(CIDRAP News) – Another human case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (bird flu) was confirmed in Vietnam today, bringing total confirmed cases to 11, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The case involved a 4-year-old boy who fell ill Dec 22, was hospitalized a week later, and is now fully recovered, the WHO said. Vietnam now has had eight confirmed cases, and Thailand has three. Six cases in Vietnam and two in Thailand were fatal.

Experts endorse vaccination to help fight avian flu

(CIDRAP News) – As the human and animal toll from H5N1 avian influenza continued to rise, United Nations health and agricultural officials at a conference in Rome today endorsed selective vaccination of poultry to fight the spread of the disease.

FAO says avian flu still spreading; more human cases cited

(CIDRAP News) – Thailand reported two more confirmed human cases of H5N1 avian influenza and another death today, while the United Nations warned that the virus is still spreading in Asian poultry.

In the United States, meanwhile, an outbreak of avian influenza at four live-bird markets in New Jersey was attributed to a low-pathogenic strain that poses no threat to humans.

South Korea has new avian flu outbreak; Vietnam reports death

(CIDRAP News) – South Korea today reported its first outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in more than 6 weeks.

News of the Korean outbreak came 2 days after Vietnam reported its 16th human death from H5N1 avian flu and 3 days after international animal health officials again warned Asian countries not to declare victory over the disease too soon.

Thailand reports two more avian flu outbreaks

(CIDRAP News) – Two new outbreaks of avian influenza forced Thailand last week to further postpone plans to declare the country free of the disease, according to news service reports.

The latest outbreaks were in Chon Buri province, southeast of Bangkok, and Khon Kaen province, in the northeast, according to the Bangkok Post and Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Avian flu resurfaces in China and Thailand

(CIDRAP News) – Deadly strains of avian influenza have resurfaced on one poultry farm in China and two in Thailand.

China's first outbreak of H5N1 avian flu since March was reported Jul 3 at a farm in Anhui province in the east-central part of the country, according to Xinhua, China's official news service. The national avian flu reference laboratory confirmed yesterday that the disease was due to an H5N1 virus, Xinhua said.

More avian flu in Vietnam, Thai children cleared of diagnosis

(CIDRAP News) – Experts in Vietnam confirmed today that avian influenza has spread to an 11th province, the southern Mekong Delta province of Long An, a major poultry breeding area, according to news service reports.
