Suspected Ebola outbreak in Congo has caused 50 deaths

(CIDRAP News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that 50 people in the Congo have died of a suspected acute hemorrhagic fever syndrome. A Reuters report said the disease is suspected to be Ebola virus infection.

Hemorrhagic fever outbreak in Congo confirmed as Ebola

(CIDRAP News) – As the death toll from hemorrhagic fever in the Congo continued to climb, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed yesterday that the disease is Ebola virus infection.

The disease had claimed the lives of 59 people out of 73 infected as of yesterday, WHO officials said in a statement. An Associated Press report put the toll higher: 67 deaths among 80 cases.

WHO sees signs that SARS can be contained

(CIDRAP News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) today expressed closely guarded optimism that SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) can be contained.

"Experiences in a growing number of countries indicate that the disease can be contained, thus supporting WHO's overall objective: to prevent SARS from becoming widely established as another new disease in humans," the organization said in its online update.

WHO reports 24 Ebola cases in Congo

(CIDRAP News) – An outbreak of Ebola hemorrhagic fever in the Congo expanded to 24 cases last week, with 12 deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO reported Nov 17 that the Congo government had confirmed that the disease was Ebola, with 11 cases, all fatal, at that point. On Nov 21 the WHO reported another 13 cases, including one death.

Ebola death toll in Congo rises to 18

(CIDRAP News) – The death toll in the Ebola hemorrhagic fever outbreak in the Congo has increased to 18, with a total of 36 cases, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported yesterday.

The outbreak involves two villages in the Mbomo district of the Cuvette Ouest Department. The villages are in the northwestern Congo, about 440 miles northwest of Brazzaville, the capital, according to a Reuters report.

19 cases of Ebola fever reported in Sudan

(CIDRAP News) – Nineteen cases of Ebola hemorrhagic fever, with four deaths, have been reported in southern Sudan, the World Health Organization (WHO) said today.

The Kenya Medical Research Institute and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed Ebola virus as the cause of the cases, the WHO said.

Ebola outbreak in Sudan grows to 25 cases

(CIDRAP News) – The outbreak of Ebola hemorrhagic fever in southern Sudan has increased to 25 cases with six deaths, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced today.

The WHO had reported 19 cases and four deaths May 24 when it first confirmed the outbreak in Yambio County of Sudan's Western Equatoria province. The agency said it is continuing to help with surveillance, case management, and follow-up with contacts of patients.
