HHS awards $102 million for new flu drug

(CIDRAP News) – In an effort to expand the pool of antiviral drugs for influenza, the US government yesterday awarded a $102.6 million contract to BioCryst Pharmaceuticals Inc. of Birmingham, Ala., to develop peramivir, a new neuraminidase inhibitor.

HHS funds work on dose-sparing H5N1 vaccines

(CIDRAP News) – In an effort to stretch the nation's supply of vaccines for a potential influenza pandemic, federal health officials today announced contracts totaling $132.5 million to help three companies develop dose-sparing substances, or adjuvants, to be used with H5N1 flu vaccines.

Roche cuts Tamiflu production as demand cools

(CIDRAP News) – The Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche announced today it is scaling back production of oseltamivir (Tamiflu) because of waning demand, and simultaneously questioned whether countries stockpiling the drug are buying enough to protect their citizens in the event of an influenza pandemic.

FDA issues guidance on flu vaccine development

(CIDRAP News) – The US Food and Drug Administration recently released separate documents outlining the kinds of clinical data required for licensing of new seasonal and pandemic influenza vaccines.

In a May 31 news release, the agency said the guidance documents were designed to facilitate the rapid development and approval of new vaccines by outlining the regulatory pathways for companies.
