South Korea, Japan find more H5N1 in birds

(CIDRAP News) – Agriculture officials in South Korea said H5N1 avian influenza outbreaks have been reported in six of the country's nine provinces, while authorities in Japan announced today that wild swans at a two more sites have tested positive for the virus.

Indonesian boy dies of avian flu; Japan confirms H5N1 in swans

(CIDRAP News) – Indonesia today reported that a 3-year-old boy died last week of an H5N1 influenza infection, as Japan confirmed that the virus found recently in four wild swans was H5N1, according to news agencies.

Lili Sulistyowati of the Indonesian health ministry said the 3-year-old was from Manyaran village in Central Java and died April 23 after a respiratory illness, according to a Reuters report today.

Europe says Tamiflu-resistant virus seen in 9 countries

(CIDRAP News) – European officials yesterday reported more evidence that one of the three types of seasonal influenza viruses is showing resistance to oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and said this represents the first clear sign that the resistant variant can spread.

EU reports 741 H5N1 cases in wild birds since February

(CIDRAP news) – The European Commission (EC) reported yesterday that 741 cases of H5N1 avian influenza have been detected among about 60,000 wild birds tested in European Union states since February.

The EC presented its data during the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)/World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) International Scientific Conference on Avian Influenza and Wild Birds, which concluded yesterday in Rome.

FAO seeks more funds for avian flu; Denmark confirms outbreak

(CIDRAP News) – The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said today it needs $308 million to fight avian influenza over the next 3 years, more than twice the amount estimated a few months ago.

The announcement came as Denmark confirmed its first H5N1 avian influenza outbreak in domestic poultry. In initial reports yesterday, officials said the virus had been identified only as an H5.

Romania fires vet officials as avian flu spreads

(CIDRAP News) – Romania has fired two top veterinary officials and arrested a private veterinarian amid spreading outbreaks of avian influenza in the past 2 days, according to news agencies.

Meanwhile, Denmark has found an H5 avian flu virus in domestic birds for the first time, and Nigeria is reporting a new outbreak of H5N1 in poultry after a lull of several weeks, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
