Interspecies Transmission of Influenza Viruses

Intended Audience

This training module is directed toward a variety of professions and backgrounds including but not limited to: veterinarians, veterinary technicians, physicians, nurses, occupational health professionals, other health professionals, swine and poultry workers/supervisors.

Overall Goal

The goal of this training module is to describe the process of and the occurrence of interspecies transmission of influenza viruses. Factors related to influenza transmission, as well as transmission between birds, between mammals, and between birds and mammals, and methods of preventing interspecies transmission will be discussed.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this module the learner will have:

  • A familiarity with the occurrence of interspecies transmission of influenza viruses between birds, between birds and mammals, and between mammals including interspecies transmission of influenza viruses involving humans
  • A basic understanding of the potential mechanisms of interspecies transmission of influenza viruses
