Pandemic Influenza Toolkit Process

McHenry County's pandemic preparedness toolkits contain a variety of good templates and posters that could be used by any organization. Included are a Pandemic Planning Outline for Businesses that coincides with the Health and Human Services (HHS) Business Checklist; planning templates for schools and daycare facilities with key messages; parent letters; signs and symptoms logs; and posters. They also have included/incorporated resources developed by other entities (e.g., HHS checklist, Minnesota Department of Health's "Cover Your Cough" poster).

A noteworthy aspect of the project was the process used to develop these toolkits. McHenry County created a steering committee composed of representatives who would be involved in a government response to pandemic influenza, as well as private sector businesses and organizations. The steering committee oversaw subcommittees responsible for the creation or adaptation of planning tools in the following areas: 1) Healthcare; 2) Critical Infrastructure; 3) Family preparedness; 4) Businesses; and 5) Schools. Each subcommittee was given a clear definition of the task, and three months to complete their work. McHenry County met the self-imposed deadline, and disbanded the steering committee upon completion of the toolkits.
