During H1N1, the Michigan Department of Community Health partnered with regional Civil Air Patrol squadrons to deliver antivirals to the Upper Peninsula to ensure deliveries were made throughout the state in the most expeditious manner. Previous exercises and training helped personnel ensure that the missions were successful.

Toolkit paves the way for hospitals to meet children's needs during a disaster

Due to growing concern over the specific needs of children during an emergency, public health agencies and hospitals are seeking to enhance clinical readiness for all hospitals that may see children during a mass casualty event. In response to this issue, the King County Healthcare Coalition developed a pediatric medical management toolkit and evacuation plan for regional hospitals.

Public Health Planning Group Develops Resources to Help Schools Respond to H1N1

Following the first wave of H1N1, the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (NH DHHS) formed six planning groups to prepare for a second wave of the pandemic in fall 2009. These planning groups addressed essential target capabilities: surveillance and laboratory, clinical guidance, medical surge, continuity of operations, risk communication, and countermeasure administration.

When disease incidence peaked last fall, and before vaccine was available, Public Health – Seattle & King County employees noticed that it was experiencing some messaging challenges. Although public health staff had been communicating the importance of staying home with flu-like symptoms, it became apparent that people were not following the guidance. H1N1 Vaccine Clinics for Medically Fragile Children

The Rhode Island State Health Department began holding H1N1 vaccination clinics for medically fragile children, who are defined as children with severe neurological illnesses or other severe chronic, underlying medical conditions, beginning in November 2009. Medically fragile children are at higher risk for severe complications from H1N1 influenza.

Fact sheets and resources from the Connecticut Department of Public Health provide basic information about H1N1 influenza in multiple languages. A fact sheet answers many frequently asked questions, including questions about influenza transmission, prevention, symptoms, and treatment. The fact sheet links to other documents, including documents that focus on preventing and containing influenza in children.

Red Cross Home Care for Pandemic Flu (National)

Home Care for Pandemic Flu is a two-page guide for the public on how to care for sick family members at home during a pandemic. The brochure includes a home care supply list, lists flu symptoms, describes how to prevent spreading the flu, gives guidelines on recognizing and treating fever and dehydration, and a recipe for oral rehydration solution (ORS). The ORS recipe provides another option for treating dehydration at home.

Closed Dispensing Site Guide

The Closed Dispensing Site Workbook is designed to help community organizations become closed dispensing sites to administer medication to their staff and/or clients during an emergency. The workbook is an alternative to traditional prophylaxis dispensing site and is intended to disburse preventive medication to an entire population within 48 hours.

Comic book teaches pandemic preparedness and resilience

"No Ordinary Flu" features a child learning how his ancestors experienced the 1918 influenza pandemic and teaching his family about preparedness. It is available in 20 languages, including Arabic, Bosnian, French, Hmong, Korean, Oromo, Punjabi, Tagalog, and Ukrainian.

Special Needs Task Force and Registry

New Hanover County, North Carolina, built and maintained a voluntary special needs emergency registry through their Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). The registry was initiated in 1997 and housed under the Department of Emergency Management until 2003, when grant funds became available to support maintenance of a registry by RSVP.

FBO/CBO Outreach and Coordination

A campaign to integrate community-based organizations (CBOs) and faith-based organizations (FBOs) into pandemic preparedness considers the ways in which these organizations have the ability to assist a large number and diversity of people. The campaign has two purposes: 1) to identify clients or members who are served by community organizations and may need special assistance during a pandemic; and 2) to assist organizations as they create emergency call-down procedures.

Gripe Pandemica Fotonovela

A fotonovela developed by North Carolina Division of Public Health teaches Spanish-reading individuals about pandemic influenza (gripe pandemica). A fotonovela is a comic-style novel that uses photos instead of illustrations, and the Gripe Pandemica Fotonovela tells a brief story about personal preparedness in Spanish. The story and pictures feature a boy who is telling his parents about the pandemic flu preparedness information he has learned in school.

Emergency Communications Toolkit

A well-organized, useful web site provides tools to guide effective emergency risk communications for public information officers (PIOs) and other communicators. A series of checklists offers specific guidance to meaningfully advance planning and communication activities. Reviewers found the checklists on initial response, response, choosing a spokesperson, anticipated questions and answers, and sample assignments useful and comprehensive.

Flu Watch Communication Campaign

A basic but complete overview of seasonal and pandemic issues focuses on education, basic prevention, and personal preparedness. The materials are simple, clearly branded, consistent, and pre-packaged into user-friendly campaign materials. A press release, fliers, and other materials allow others to conduct educational presentations. Use of the governor in a public service announcement helps to emphasize the importance of the message.

Disaster Readiness Tips for People with Disabilities (National)

The Disaster Readiness Tips highlight a broad overview of preparedness for people with different functional needs. The brochures emphasize the importance of identifying needs and resources and encourage people to build a plan around their specific circumstances. Preparedness activities are divided into several areas that allow people to focus on one step at a time.
