The Massachusetts Department of Public Health created a visual tool for two-way conversations between emergency shelter staff and people with communication needs. The booklet allows shelter staff to ensure residents know how the shelter operates and residents to use images to express their needs and concerns.

Guidance helps integrate concerns about sexual violence into the roles and procedures of disaster responders

After Hurricane Katrina, the National Sexual Violence Resource Center and several Louisiana organizations developed guidance and resources for disaster responders to use in preventing and responding to sexual violence. With input from public meetings, the agencies created the guide to help organizations develop sexual assault prevention and response procedures. Their cross-disciplinary approach helped integrate sexual violence concerns into disaster response.

In response to state demographics, a Florida Department of Health (DOH) work group developed a guide for emergency responders to communicate with various vulnerable populations during a disaster. The Vulnerable Populations Committee of Jackson and Josephine Counties in Oregon developed the READY BOOK to ensure on-the-spot access to vital information needed by caregivers and medical professionals who assist individuals in need during an emergency.

Texas created dengue fever public health response guide

Texas worked with northern Mexican states to monitor increasing cases of dengue fever and create a response guide that includes case definitions, statutory authority citations, a protocol for mosquito surveillance and vector control, recommended information/education, and state contact information.

Partnerships Key to Vaccination Campaign Success

Early in the 2009 H1N1 vaccination effort, daycares, schools, colleges and universities in the state were strongly encouraged to vaccinate people between the ages of 6 months and 24 years. The workbook is an alternative to traditional prophylaxis dispensing site and is intended to disburse preventive medication to an entire population within 48 hours.

Diabetes Disaster Preparedness Guide

Hunterdon Healthcare System developed a Diabetes Disaster Preparedness Guide for diabetes patients who must manage their condition during an emergency. The guide is intended to be used by patients during a variety of disasters, yet some of the information (e.g., foot care and blood sugar during strenuous physical labor) is applicable only to a structural or environmental disaster. The guide was later used by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.

Emergency Preparedness Tips for Those with Functional Needs Guidebook

The Emergency Preparedness Tips for Those with Functional Needs Guidebook was developed by a team of emergency management and health professionals to provide preparedness tips for people with a variety of special needs. In addition to providing detailed information on building a disaster kit and documenting important health information, the guidebook also contains specific advice for seniors and the deaf and hard of hearing.

Neighborhood Emergency Teams

The "Neighborhood Emergency Teams" (NET) manual provides material with which local government officials can provide public safety information to individuals, families, and neighborhoods during a public health emergency. The information is designed to be used after a disaster declaration by a two-person team comprising a city or county employee and a volunteer.

Linking Home Care and Public Health

The Montgomery County Advanced Practice Center developed a toolkit to assist health departments in conducting a pandemic influenza preparedness workshop for home care providers. While much of the toolkit focuses on continuity-of-operations planning for home care agencies, it also provides home care agencies with materials to enhance personal preparedness and knowledge about pandemic flu scenarios among their clients.
