After Hurricane Katrina, the National Sexual Violence Resource Center and several Louisiana organizations developed guidance and resources for disaster responders to use in preventing and responding to sexual violence. With input from public meetings, the agencies created the guide to help organizations develop sexual assault prevention and response procedures. Their cross-disciplinary approach helped integrate sexual violence concerns into disaster response.

The Vietnamese and Latino communities have been well-established in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Vietnamese began coming to New Orleans in the mid-1970s, starting their own restaurants, stores, and organizations. Primarily established in New Orleans East and the West Bank, the Vietnamese community has developed a self-sustaining community network, including health care resources.

The state worked with faith-based organizations and houses of worship to develop and distribute H1N1 information. Materials are available in Chinese, Haitian Creole, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

The Rhode Island Department of Health and the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency (EMA) held the "Pandemic Influenza and Special Needs Leadership Training Program" during three days in mid-September, 2009.

Illinois Faith-Based Preparedness Initiative

This partnership between the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Broadcast Ministers' Alliance and Health Care Consortium provides a web site where faith-based organizations can access tips on disaster preparedness. The site is all-hazards, but pandemic influenza is used as a specific example in some cases. The site is divided into pages titled "Prepare," "Listen," "Act," and "Now" (P.L.A.N.).

Closed Dispensing Site Guide

The Closed Dispensing Site Workbook is designed to help community organizations become closed dispensing sites to administer medication to their staff and/or clients during an emergency. The workbook is an alternative to traditional prophylaxis dispensing site and is intended to disburse preventive medication to an entire population within 48 hours.
