Dispense Assist online screening system helps Kansas county improve POD throughput, serve vulnerable populations

In response to Cities Readiness Initiative requirements, the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment (JCDHE), in conjunction with Kansas City metro partners, developed an online screening and voucher system for Points of Dispensing (PODs). The system enables one client to move through a POD in 35 seconds, reduces responder time and effort, and engages the public more fully in emergency preparedness.

Toolkit encourages health departments to engage pharmacies in all-hazards preparedness and response

A partnership between Maryland and Florida counties created a toolkit for engaging pharmacists in preparedness.

Collaborative drug therapy agreement toolkit for pharmacies and public health

Community and retail pharmacists possess significant skills that can be useful during an emergency response, including vast knowledge about pharmaceutical effects and interactions and the ability to clinically assess illness. Pharmacy involvement in emergency preparedness and response varies between jurisdictions due to differences in state statutes that define how far a pharmacist's clinical reach can extend.

Healthcare, public health partnerships support flood victims

Tennessee worked with pharmacies to ensure that people displaced by flooding had necessary medications.

Antiviral Distribution for the Control of H1N1

Building new partnerships, including with large retail chains, helped Texas dramatically expand its options for distributing antiviral medications during the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic.

Modifying Procedure Helps Pharmacists Provide Flu Vaccinations

The state of Louisiana found that tweaking procedures and protocols allowed pharmacists to provide flu vaccines, greatly expanding the ranks of potential vaccinators in the state. In 2009, Louisiana law already allowed pharmacists who had received the proper training and were credentialed by the Board of Pharmacy as vaccinators, to administer vaccine when it was prescribed.

Tracking H1N1 Trends Through Electronic Prescription Records

Rhode Island state health officials are tracking the spread of H1N1 influenza through electronic prescription records, which are believed to help doctors more easily identify an outbreak of the illness. The tracking is enabled by the state's success with e-prescribing and the digital healthcare infrastructure available through its partnership with Surescripts, an electronic prescription network.

Antiviral Coordination with Pharmacies

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control established a partnership with the community and corporate sector to facilitate the rapid local dispersal of medical countermeasures in Public Health Region 8, which includes four counties along the Southern coastal tip of the state.

Public Antiviral Stockpile Program

The purpose of Florida's Antiviral Stockpile program is to assure that anyone who has a prescribed need for medication to treat influenza-like illness has access to it, regardless of their ability to pay. Based on this goal, the state identified two situations in which interventions might be necessary: instances in which individuals are unable to afford antivirals, and times in which pharmacies are not able to meet demand for antivirals out of their own supplies.

Operational Framework for Partnering with Pharmacies for Administration of 2009 H1N1 Vaccine

The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) created this guidance in consultation with national pharmacy and pharmacist associations, thought leaders from national and regional chain drug stores, ASTHO members, and key federal officials. The aim of the document is to assist health departments in maximizing the potential of chain and independent pharmacies as a viable resource for vaccination sites as part of an aggressive and comprehensive planning effort.
