Our May quiz allows you to test your knowledge on Gram stain-guided antibiotic therapy in patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia.

Global Policy and Projects

Continuity for TB Care in Ukraine and Refugee-Hosting Countries

The World Health Organization released an information note on ensuring continuity of essential tuberculosis services for people with or at risk of the disease in Ukraine or in refugee-hosting countries.

Water Monitoring Technology for AMR in Scotland

North Edinburgh News reports on "Technologies for Monitoring and Treatment of Antimicrobial Resistance in Water," the first review of potential solutions for monitoring and reducing AMR in Scotland's waters, carried out by James Hutton Institute and Heriot-Watt University and funded by Scotland's Centre of Expertise for Waters.

Diagnostics, Misinformation, and Antibiotic Use during COVID-19

In an interview for Contagion, Alexandra Ward, MA, speaks with Payal Patel, MD, MPH, about how misinformation, lack of access to rapid diagnostics, testing backlog, and cognitive biases have contributed to inappropriate antibiotic use during the pandemic.

Antimicrobial Use in Chilean Salmon Farming

On SeafoodSource, Christian Molinari reports on a 2021 increase in antimicrobial use in Chilean salmon farming, noting that until 2021, antimicrobial use had been decreasing steadily since 2015. Chile’s National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca) attributes the higher antimicrobial use to algal bloom events, along with logistical delays and longer pathogen exposure times caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cambodian AMR National Action Plan Progress

A Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations press release highlights progress in implementing Cambodia's National Action Plan on AMR.

Antimicrobial Stewardship Intervention for Cytoscopy

On MedPage Today, Mike Bassett summarizes research presented at the annual meeting of the American Urological Association that found a nearly 30% reduction in prophylactic antibiotic use for cytoscopy at a US medical center following an intervention comprising education, modification of electronic order sets, and audit and feedback. Infection rates also dropped slightly following the implementation of the intervention.

Fungal Infections and AMR-Focused Journalism

In an article for the Association of Health Care Journalists, Bara Vaida describes the need for journalists and other communicators to focus on fungal infections when reporting on AMR.
