The pathogen that causes COVID-19 is a respiratory virus that was first identified in Wuhan, China, in late 2019. The virus, is referred to as SARS-CoV-2 and is spreading worldwide. The organism is a member of a family of viruses that also cause the common cold and other respiratory illnesses, including SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), which emerged in 2002, and MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome), which first appeared in 2012. Coronaviruses get their name from their crown-like appearance—"corona" in Latin refers to a crown or garland.
