Animal commerce rules tightened to prevent monkeypox

(CIDRAP News) – Federal health officials have tightened restrictions on trafficking in prairie dogs and African rodents to prevent the spread of monkeypox.

An outbreak of human monkeypox in the United States last May and June was traced to a shipment of imported African rodents. The disease apparently spread from the rodents to pet prairie dogs and on to people, leading to 37 confirmed, 12 probable, and 22 suspected human cases.

Monkeypox case count drops to 71

(CIDRAP News) – The number of possible human monkeypox cases dropped in the past week as investigators ruled out 11 cases while confirming three, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced today.

Monkeypox confirmed in imported African rodents

(CIDRAP News) – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said today it has confirmed monkeypox in six rodents from a shipment of African mammals that is believed to be the source of the current monkeypox outbreak in the United States.
