FDA approves new vaccine facility

(CIDRAP News) –The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced approval of a new influenza vaccine manufacturing facility in Pennsylvania that could be used to produce a vaccine against the novel influenza H1N1 (swine flu) virus.

WHO: H1N1 flu more contagious than seasonal virus

(CIDRAP News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) today said the novel H1N1 influenza (swine flu) virus seems to be more contagious than seasonal flu, but it generally causes "very mild illness" in otherwise healthy people.

Obama seeks more funds for novel flu fight

(CIDRAP News) – President Barack Obama this week asked Congress for another $2 billion in supplemental funds to fight the novel H1N1 influenza epidemic, on top of $2 billion requested a month ago, and also proposed to tap federal economic stimulus funds for up to another $3.1 billion for the same purpose.

Meanwhile, public health advocates said even more may be needed if a nationwide H1N1 vaccination campaign is launched in the fall.

Congress approves $7.65 billion for pandemic flu response

(CIDRAP News) – Responding to lobbying by the Obama administration and public health advocates, Congress last week approved $7.65 billion for battling pandemic influenza, more than three times what the House and Senate had earlier proposed.

ACEP unveils plan to manage fall pandemic wave

(CIDRAP News) – The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) recently released a plan to help emergency departments, first responders, and public health departments manage a surge in pandemic flu cases that many experts predict will happen this fall.
