Indonesia reports H5N1 outbreak on BaliAn animal health official on Indonesia's Bali island reported an H5N1 outbreak in chickens in Badung district, which led to the recent culling of 133 birds, the Jakarta Globe reported today. A man who experienced flu-like symptoms after he was exposed to sick birds was treated with oseltamivir and appears to be improving, the report said.

H1N1 FLU BREAKING NEWS: Cases reach 2,500, Mexico's severe cases, concern about viral mixing, holding at phase 5

The World Health Organization (WHO) listed a global total of 2,500 confirmed cases of swine influenza H1N1 in 25 countries today. That total included 1,204 cases in Mexico, 896 cases in the United States (yesterday's number), 214 in Canada, 88 in Spain, and 34 in the United Kingdom. The death toll remains at 44, including 42 in Mexico and 2 in the United States. [WHO update 22]

(CIDRAP News) – Against the backdrop of a global struggle to solve a dispute related to H5N1 avian influenza virus sharing and an anxious watch over the novel H1N1 virus sweeping the globe, a new public database for sharing influenza genetic sequences is easing the flow of data and winning the support of a growing community of researchers and health officials, even some from countries that have sparred in the past over intellectual property rights.
