HHS names 6 new members to biodefense advisory panel

(CIDRAP News) – Six new members have been appointed to the National Biodefense Science Board (NBSB), the expert committee that advises the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on preparing for bioterrroism and other public health emergencies, HHS officials announced yesterday.

The six new members replace six whose 3-year terms ended Dec 31, HHS said in a news release.

Proposed budget trims preparedness funds, boosts FDA

(CIDRAP News) – The Obama administration's proposed budget for fiscal year 2012, released today, would reduce funds for public health and hospital emergency preparedness while giving the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) a boost for food safety.

Federal shutdown would slow but not stop disease-control efforts

Federal preparedness advisers approve disaster research recommendations

HHS reports hospital preparedness gains across nation

(CIDRAP News) – Federal funds provided through the Hospital Preparedness Program (HPP) have enabled hospitals across the nation to make substantial advances in preparedness for many kinds of public health emergencies, including epidemics, according to the first state-by-state report on the program, released yesterday.

NRC seeks changes in US vaccine program for biodefense workers

(CIDRAP News) – A report from the National Research Council (NRC) calls for some changes in a US Army immunization program for lab researchers who work with dangerous pathogens, saying the vaccines need to be made more accessible to civilian scientists.

Senate starts work on preparedness law reauthorization

(CIDRAP News) – A Senate committee began work on reauthorizing the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act (PAHPA) yesterday by calling federal and public health officials before them to testify about gaps and what steps are needed to better prepare the nation against flu and bioterror threats.
