(CIDRAP News) – Low doses of a cell-based avian flu vaccine triggered a good immune response to the H5N1 avian influenza virus, according to preliminary results of a clinical trial by Baxter International of Deerfield, Ill., maker of the vaccine.

Indonesia reports 54th avian flu case

(CIDRAP News) – Indonesian health officials are reporting that a 44-year-old man who died last week tested positive for the H5N1 avian influenza virus, according to news services.

If the man's lab results are confirmed by a World Health Organization (WHO) accredited laboratory in Hong Kong, he will be Indonesia’s 42nd avian flu fatality and 54th confirmed case. Also, Indonesia will be tied with Vietnam for the highest avian flu death toll.

Indonesia says another child killed by avian flu

(CIDRAP News) – A 3-year-old Indonesian girl who died yesterday tested positive in a local laboratory for the H5N1 avian influenza virus, according to news services.

If her case is confirmed by a World Health Organization (WHO) laboratory in Hong Kong, she will be recorded as Indonesia’s 41st avian flu fatality. Only Vietnam, with 42 deaths, has had more fatal cases than Indonesia, which has had a total of 52 confirmed cases.

(CIDRAP News) – A 5-year-old boy who died Jun 16 in East Java province has become Indonesia's 40th death from H5N1 avian influenza, according to test results from a World Health Organization (WHO)-accredited lab, as reported today by Reuters.

WHO confirms Indonesia's 39th avian flu death

(CIDRAP News) – A 13-year-old boy from south Jakarta who died Jun 14 represented Indonesia's 51st avian influenza case and was the 39th Indonesian to succumb, according to a World Health Organization (WHO) statement today.

His death leaves Indonesia only three fatalities behind Vietnam, which has reported the most H5N1 deaths in the world but hasn't had a human case since late last year, according to WHO information.

WHO confirms Indonesian H5N1 case; nurses test negative

(CIDRAP News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) today confirmed that a 15-year-old Indonesian boy who died May 30 had H5N1 avian influenza, but the agency said four nurses who had suspicious symptoms after caring for avian flu patients were not infected.

Case for human spread of avian flu in Indonesia grows

(CIDRAP News) – All seven confirmed cases of H5N1 avian influenza in the family cluster in Indonesia involved "close and prolonged exposure" to another infected person, suggesting person-to-person transmission, the World Health Organization (WHO) said today.
