Avian flu reported in Japan; WHO assesses Asian outbreaks

(CIDRAP News) – An outbreak of a mild form of avian influenza was reported in Japan today, as the World Health Organization (WHO) voiced concern about the recent spread of H5N1 avian flu to Russia and Kazakhstan.

Bird slaughter in Russia attempts to contain avian flu

(CIDRAP News) – Mass culling of domestic poultry in 13 villages in the Novosibirsk province of Russia is reportedly being carried out today. In addition, thousands of area families are being checked daily for illness, and farmers have been ordered to wear protective garments in an effort to contain the avian influenza outbreak there.

Russian birds have H5N1; 2 more deaths in Vietnam

Avian flu confirmed in three Indonesian deaths

(CIDRAP News) – Indonesian officials confirmed today that a man and his two young daughters who died earlier this month had H5N1 avian influenza, though they had had no known contact with infected poultry.

The 38-year-old man and his daughters, aged 1 and 9, were the first Indonesians to die of the illness. Indonesia has had a number of poultry outbreaks but only one previous human case, an asymptomatic one reported last month.

Thailand has first avian flu outbreaks in 3 months

(CIDRAP News) – Avian influenza has surfaced in poultry flocks in Thailand for the first time in 3 months, according to reports from the country.

The disease has broken out among birds at five locations in Suphan Buri province, about 60 miles north of Bangkok, according to several news services. The Associated Press reported that the disease was found in 10 fighting cocks in five villages where outbreaks occurred in 2004.

Avian flu claims third victim in Cambodia

(CIDRAP News) – Avian influenza claimed its third Cambodian victim when an 8-year-old girl died in a Phnom Penh hospital Apr 7, news services reported yesterday.

The girl was from Kampot, the same province as Cambodia's first two victims of H5N1 avian flu, said Ly Sovann, head of the Cambodian health minstry's infectious disease department, as quoted in an Agence France-Presse (AFP) report.

Avian flu surveillance, prevention efforts expand in Asia

(CIDRAP News) – Thai officials this week stepped up surveillance and prevention efforts against avian influenza, mirroring events taking place across Southeast Asia.

Thai authorities announced they had 100,000 doses of avian flu vaccine in event of a serious poultry outbreak in Thailand, the Thai News Agency reported today. More laboratories also have been opened in the country to speed testing.
