Origin of the pH1N1 2009 Influenza Virus

Intended Audience

This training module is directed toward a variety of professions and backgrounds including but not limited to: physicians, nurses, veterinarians, veterinary technicians, wildlife professionals, government workers, researchers, students, and international workers.

Overall Goal

The goal of this training module is to familiarize users with the viral structure and evolution of H1N1 influenza, historical context of pandemic influenza virus strains, and key uncertainties related to the emergence of the pH1N1 2009 virus.


Upon successful completion of this module the learner will have:

  1. A basic understanding of influenza viruses, pandemic influenza strains, and the genetic origins of the pH1N1 2009 influenza virus strain
  2. The ability to identify the three genetic lineages represented in the pH1N1 2009 influenza virus and list two uncertainties related to the emergence of this strain
