Resource manual ensures smooth clinic operations

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) is organized geographically into eight public health regions. Region 6 includes three large counties located along the northeast coast of the state. As state employees were planning H1N1 vaccination clinics and hiring temporary staff to assist with these events, they wanted to make sure that all of the clinics had access to the materials and protocols necessary to ensure smooth and consistent operations. Therefore, DHEC Region 6 staff developed a detailed resource manual to guide their colleagues through both school-based and public vaccination clinics. The resulting resource manual contains important phone numbers, protocols, job action sheets, supply lists, standing orders, and other data collection forms.

The region's administrative team created two separate manuals-one specifically for school-based clinics and one for public clinics held at regional health departments. The manuals were created to make sure all clinics operated as smoothly and timely as possible and that staff understood what their particular duties entailed. The manual was especially helpful in school settings, which included a mixture of staff from both school districts and DHEC. A total of 12 manuals were made for Region 6, and all clinic managers reported positive feedback. The initiative was such a success that other regions throughout South Carolina have requested this resource for use in their vaccination clinics.
