Global meningitis guidelines. The WHO released its first global guidelines on community-acquired bacterial and viral meningitis diagnosis, treatment, and care. Learn more.
 

Call for AMR civil society task force members. The WHO welcomes expressions of interest for membership on its civil society task force on AMR. Applications are due by May 31. Learn more.
 

WHO pathogen prioritization process. In The Lancet Infectious Diseases, Hatim Sati, MD, et al provide an in-depth view of the process used to prioritize pathogens for the 2024 update of the WHO Bacterial Priority Pathogens List. Learn more.
 

Antimicrobial de-escalation challenges. On Contagion, Caitlin Hart, PharmD, and Lauren R. Biehle, PharmD, discuss the current research and challenges around de-escalation of empirical antimicrobial therapy. Learn more.

Regional AMR Case Studies

European region. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) published the results of a point-prevalence survey of antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention and control in European long-term care facilities, finding gaps in appropriate diagnosis of healthcare-associated infections and training on proper antibiotic prescribing and hand hygiene practices. European region. The ECDC published an assessment of future challenges for infectious disease prevention and control in the EU and globally, calling AMR one of the key drivers of change. Learn more.
 

Fiji. The Doherty Institute reports on Fiji's launch of a pathogen genomics laboratory, which will allow the country to respond rapidly to infectious disease outbreaks and antimicrobial-resistant infections. Learn more.
 

Guyana. Guyana's Ministry of Health highlights a recent meeting with a delegation from the Pan American Health Organization and the UK Department of Health and Social Care to strengthen AMR surveillance and diagnostic systems. Learn more.
 

Montenegro. The ECDC, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety, and the European Food Safety Authority posted a report on a country visit to Montenegro to assess laboratory capacity for AMR surveillance in human and animal health, healthcare facility training and availability of guidelines for antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention and control, and the risk of environmental antibiotic pollution. Nepal. In a Mount Sinai blog post, Roberto Pasada, MD, describes the launch of an antimicrobial stewardship program at Nepal's Dhulikhel Hospital, which includes availability of an antibiogram for clinician decision-making, approval for the use of restricted antibiotics, weekly rounding of an antimicrobial stewardship committee, and the development for treatment guidelines for common infections. United States. The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America—in collaboration with the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society—published a position paper that urges US healthcare facilities, regulatory agencies, and payors to improve the standards and effectiveness of healthcare infection prevention and control programs. United States. The Infectious Diseases Society of America published guidelines for the treatment of asymptomatic Histoplasma pulmonary nodules and mild or moderate acute pulmonary histoplasmosis in adults, children, and pregnant people, which is an update to the 2007 clinical practice guidelines. United States. In Infectious Disease Special Edition, Taylor Morrisette, PharmD, MPH, describes current questions, challenges, and practices related to antibiotic use and stewardship for pediatric patients in the United States. Learn more.

AMR, Agriculture, and the Environment

Socioeconomic and environmental influences on AMR in Asia. The Centre for Impact Investing and Practices, in collaboration with the World Economic Forum's Giving to Amplify Earth Action initiative, published a report and 15 case studies that explore the social, economic, and environmental influences on AMR in Asia. Agrifood AMR surveillance in Kazakhstan. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations highlights Kazakhstan's efforts to boost laboratory monitoring capabilities for AMR in the country's agrifood systems. Learn more.
