News Stories Worth Noting

The federal omnibus spending bill for 2023 earmarks $70 million to help wildlife agencies combat CWD, Outdoor Life reports. The spending package made it through Congress and has been signed by US President Joe Biden.

The Mississippi State University (MSU) Deer Ecology & Management Lab, in collaboration with multiple partners and funding from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), has announced a CWD video series, with 13 episodes currently posted. The series provides CWD information in short, easy-to-understand videos. Topics include how CWD spreads, management, what hunters can do, and more.

Working dogs have been brought out to the Blackfeet Nation reservation in Montana this year to track down environmental contamination, but next summer, they’ll hunt for traces of an even worse-understood health hazard: CWD. The project aims to see whether there may be an overlap between environmental contamination sites, where animals may have lower immune systems, and CWD.

Seven timber companies and four conservation organizations are joining to fight the spread of CWD. The new CWD coalition will promote practices that help discover, manage, and mitigate the negative impacts of CWD.
