(CIDRAP News) Walgreens announced yesterday that it has started offering the flu vaccine at stores, and other pharmacy chains also expect to launch their programs for the 2011-12 flu season in the coming weeks.
The company said the flu vaccine is available in all of its 7,700 stores, which include Duane Reade pharmacies in New York and more than 350 Take Care Clinics, according to a company press release.
(CIDRAP News) A person hospitalized in Minnesota has contracted inhalational anthrax after traveling in western states, officials from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) announced today.
In a release, the MDH said that the agency and its partners at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are investigating the infection, which apparently stemmed from environmental exposure.

(CIDRAP News) Researchers who combed through scores of serologic studies estimate that the global cumulative incidence of pandemic H1N1 influenza infection before vaccines became available was probably below 20%, far lower than the 50% that pandemic planners had envisioned as a possible worst case.
(CIDRAP News) Two Eurosurveillance reports yesterday shed new light on secondary infections in Europe's Escherichia coli O104:H4 outbreak, suggesting that the pathogen isn't more transmissible than other similar strains and that it can lose its extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) resistance.

(CIDRAP News) – Federal officials reported today that ground turkey products belonging to two patients in the current multistate Salmonella outbreak were traced to a Cargill Inc. facility on Jul 20, 2 weeks before investigators presented all their evidence to the company, prompting yesterday's Cargill recall of 36 million pounds of ground turkey.

(CIDRAP News) Cargill Value Added Meats, a Cargill Meat Solutions Corp. unit based in Wichita, Kan., announced late today that it was recalling about 36 million pounds of fresh and frozen ground turkey produced at its Springdale, Ark., facility, because of possible links to a multistate Salmonella Heidelberg outbreak.
