(CIDRAP News) On the second and final day of an Institute of Medicine (IOM) task force meeting on how to protect healthcare workers from the novel H1N1 virus, experts focused on issues surrounding the effectiveness and practical use of masks and respirators in work settings.
The IOM task force's goal is to make recommendations about how to protect healthcare workers during the H1N1 pandemic.
It's my job to stay current--even anticipate--what the world of pandemic influenza will look like over the next months. But you will never hear me predict severity. Never. You deserve better than that! The severity of past pandemics predicts nothing about the current pandemic. Worse, it distracts our attention from what we must do right now.

(CIDRAP News) In a revision of its advice for how long those who are sick with the novel H1N1 virus should stay away from others, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) yesterday shortened the time period, which may reduce some of the pandemic's absence burden on businesses and schools.

India flu death spurs crowds, tussles at hospital
(CIDRAP News) Though infectious disease experts say it is impossible to predict how severe the next wave of the novel H1N1 pandemic will be, experts from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) observe that it so far resembles the 1957-58 influenza pandemic in several ways. They report that the earlier pandemic caused minimal disruptions, in part because public health officials didn't close schools, cancel public events, or impose travel restrictions.
(CIDRAP News) In an update on H1N1 influenza activity, the World Health Organization (WHO) said today that 168 countries and territories on all continents have now had cases and that the new virus increasingly dominates the flu landscape.
