(CIDRAP News) – Health officials in North Carolina and their federal partners are investigating an outbreak of an uncommon Salmonella strain that has sickened 34 people who visited or live in Buncombe County since the end of February.
The Buncombe County Health Department (BCHD) listed the strain as Salmonella enterica serotype Paratyphi B and said it has a genetic fingerprint that is not common.

(CIDRAP News) – Spurred by events surrounding two controversial H5N1 transmission studies, a US Senate committee today questioned federal officials whose agencies have a stake in dual-use research of concern (DURC) about the procedures they use to spot possible bioterror threats.
(CIRAP News) – A second strain of Salmonella has been identified in a 21-state outbreak with a contaminated tuna product as the likely cause, and the total number of cases has jumped to 200, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced today.
(CIDRAP News) – To mark World Malaria Day, global health groups today warned that funding cuts could erode progress in fighting the disease, a point that was underscored by a new study that highlighted wavering support and a dramatic increase in disease activity in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In addition, the World Health Organization (WHO) and other agencies announced new strategies to fight the disease.
