(CIDRAP News) Two patients who are part of a suspected H5N1 avian influenza case cluster in northern Vietnam's Bac Kan province are still hospitalized, with 11 others isolated for flu-like symptoms, health officials said today.
The two hospitalized patients include a 22-year-old man and a 27-month-old girl whose confirmed infections were previously reported by the Vietnamese media, the Associated Press (AP) reported today.

(CIDRAP News) – Consumer groups have contended that the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) investigates less aggressively when it finds E coli O157:H7 in routine testing of ground beef than it does when an E coli outbreak is linked to contaminated meat. As a result, the groups argue, the agency misses a chance to prevent some illnesses.
(CIDRAP News) – The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspected only 24% of food facilities annually in a recent 5-year period, issued relatively few notices of potential safety violations, and didn't always follow up on the problems it did find, according to an audit report by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
