Chronic wasting disease detected in another Wisconsin deer

Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced today that a wild white-tailed buck harvested during the state's recent archery season in Dunn County near Menomonie in the western part of state has tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD).

News of the CWD detection comes on the eve of the opening of Wisconsin's 9-day gun deer season.

Florida confirms 11th dengue case of the year; Pakistan outbreak swells

The Florida Department of Health confirmed the state's 11th locally transmitted dengue case of 2019, in Miami-Dade County, officials said yesterday. The case does not appear to be related to previously reported cases.

UNICEF said today that it is helping Samoa's government respond to a measles outbreak that has grown to more than 1,000 suspected cases, with 14 deaths in children younger than 5 years old and 1 in an adult.

Pakistan, several African countries report vaccine-derived polio cases

Pakistan, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Angola each reported new cases of vaccine-derived polio, according to the latest weekly update today from the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), and Pakistan also confirmed cases involving the wild-type virus.

US announces $56 million more in DRC Ebola outbreak support

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) today announced an additional $56 million in humanitarian aid to help curb the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Ebola outbreak.

According to a statement, the new funding brings USAID's total since the August 2018 start of the outbreak to $266 million. The support also targets preparedness efforts in the region and in countries that neighbor the DRC.

DRC confirms 1 more Ebola case, raising total to 3,273

One new case was reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Ebola outbreak today, nudging the outbreak total to 3,273, according to numbers reflected on the World Health Organization (WHO) online Ebola dashboard. Health officials are still investigating 500 suspected cases, and the number of deaths held steady at 2,183.

MERS infects Saudi boy, representing 10th case this month

Saudi Arabia reported a MERS-CoV infection in a child, which is relatively rare, according to an Oct 26 report from the country's Ministry of Health (MOH).
