Overview
This webinar will explore the shifting landscape of the rapid diagnostic laboratory with the introduction of new technologies that provide antimicrobial stewards and infection preventionists with rapid identification of organisms and their susceptibilities to antimicrobials in hours versus days. This is changing how patients are screened for antimicrobial-resistant pathogens and increasing appropriate antimicrobial prescribing to enhance patient outcomes. This is the first webinar in a three-part series on the use of innovative diagnostics in antimicrobial stewardship.
Speakers
-
Romney Humphries, PhD: Director, Division of Laboratory Medicine, Vanderbilt University Medical Center
- Ritu Banerjee, MD, PhD: Medical Director, Pediatric Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, Vanderbilt University Medical Center
- Marnie Peterson, PharmD, PhD: Outreach Coordinator for the Antimicrobial Stewardship Project at CIDRAP will serve as moderator
Learning Objectives
After attending this activity, learners will be able to:
- Describe the connection between diagnostics and antimicrobial stewardship, especially in relation to decreasing the burden of drug-resistant infections.
- Interpret and apply diagnostic laboratory results to clinical practice.
- Explain the advantages and limitations of current and emerging diagnostic technologies used for antimicrobial stewardship.

Continuing Education
Learners can claim Continuing Education credit via this activity evaluation within 30 days of activity completion. MAD-ID will send credits for pharmacy learners to CE Monitor within four weeks of submission. Learners claiming AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ can expect to receive PDF certificates via email in a similar timeframe. Please reach out to info@mad-id.org with any questions or specific requests.
The types of CE available for “Current Trends in Antimicrobial Stewardship through Diagnostic Innovations” include:
- Continuing Pharmacy Education: MAD-ID is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This enduring activity has been approved for maximum of 1.25 contact hours. The ACPE Universal Activity Number (UAN) assigned to the CE activity for confirmed learners is: 0485-9999-024-L01-P
- Continuing Medical Education: This enduring activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). MAD-ID is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education (CME) for physicians. MAD-ID designates this enduring activity for a maximum of 1.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Learners should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
- Nurse Practitioner and Registered Nurse Education: For recertification, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board and American Nurses Credentialing Center also accept AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME. We would also suggest that learners check with their state licensing board to ensure they accept reciprocity with AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ for re- licensure.
